Many clients ask if they can limit or eliminate pre-approved credit offers. The answer is that consumers may either opt out, via the internet or phone, of receiving them for five years or permanently. To opt-out permanently, a person must complete and submit a signed Permanent Opt-Out Election form, provided on request. 

Specific personal information such as a home telephone number, name, Social Security number, and date of birth must be provided by the consumer. Any information provided is confidential and will be used only to process the opt-out request.

Opting-out from prescreened lists has no effect on a consumer's ability to apply for or obtain credit or insurance. Requests to opt out are processed within five days, but it may take up to 60 days before a consumer stops receiving prescreened offers. Persons who have a change of heart may also opt back in using the same contact information to opt-out.

Opting-out stops pre-screened solicitations based on lists from the major consumer reporting companies. Solicitations may continue for credit and insurance based upon lists from other types of entities, including companies with which you have already conducted business. To stop mail from these organizations and groups, consumers must directly contact each source.
